Performance and Aesthetics in One Structure
HPL, or high-pressure laminates, are produced by pressing layers of kraft paper impregnated with phenolic resins, culminating in a decorative surface coating.
This structure gives HPL exceptional strength and stability properties, making it a popular choice for projects that require a material that is both aesthetically pleasing and functional.
Composition and Manufacture
HPL is produced by saturating several layers of kraft paper with phenolic resin. A layer of printed decorative paper is placed on top of the kraft paper before pressing. The resulting sandwich is fused together under heat and pressure (over 1,000 PSI).
Because phenolic and melamine resins are thermosetting plastics, the polymerisation process transforms the resin into plastic through a cross-linking process that turns the paper sheets into a single rigid laminated sheet. Thermosetting creates strong and irreversible bonds that contribute to the durability of HPL.
Technical Properties
Impact and abrasion resistance
The tiles are highly resistant to physical damage, making them ideal for applications in high traffic areas.
Chemical resistance
Their surface resists most chemicals, including acids, alkalis and organic solvents, making them suitable for laboratories or factories.
UV stability
The outer layer of the tiles protects against fading caused by sun exposure, maintaining the aesthetic appearance in the long term.
Fire resistance
HPL boards are classified in fire protection classes B1 and B2, indicating a high level of resistance to combustion and flame propagation.
